Two unexpected friends

During the winter I am still pursuing with my swimming at sea, in Hersonissos, Crete, especially when the sea is calm. I’m usually alone in the beach. One specific day, I saw one person sitting on the nearby rocks. When I got out of the sea, I went on to ask him if he was a tourist. His reply was that he was, and that he was renting a small apartment, since he was planning to stay for the winter. We started talking about small things and I gave him my phone number just in case he needed any help with his staying.

On Christmas his girlfriend came over and we arranged for a tour around Crete: Elounta, Agios Nikolaos, certain small and picturesque ports towards Sitia. We visited the most ancient olive tree in Greece and we unexpectedly found ourselves in an ancient Minoan settlement on top of a nearby hill, surrounded by olive trees.

The landscape was stunning and we had a clear view of the sea spanning far beyond, as far as the eye could see. That was an amazing afternoon, with the sky having turned into a giant canvas full of different colors and shapes.
