I own a small two-storey house in Mykonos, which I rent out during the summer, thus having the opportunity to meet people from all over the world. This is something that I love doing.
On that specific day a whole party of guests was leaving, so we all drove to the port only to find out that ferry services had been postponed due to challenging weather conditions. The kids were becoming very worried. All plans would have to be canceled and, on top of that, there was no place for them to spend the night over, since all hotels were fully booked. I was expecting new arrivals on that very day, so I was totally short of free beds.
However, not for one moment did I consider leaving my guests stranded. We all returned home where, in the meantime, my new guests had already arrived. I put the problem forward to everyone and we did come up with a solution: they would all stay at my home, 16 people altogether. Where there’s a will, there’s a way. New guests joined previous guests and we all became a big party.
We spent the next hours in the garden, talking, laughing, eating whatever was in the fridge, drinking and having a terrific time until the early morning hours. We did manage to catch a few hours of sleep, some of us on large pillows in the garden, under the stars.
The next day, ferry routes had totally been restored, and my guests would be on their way. Before they left, they told me that it was one of the best nights they had ever experienced. A potential disaster had turned into a memorable and valuable happening, which became a fond memory for all of them.
